Most people think of the body and machines as distinct, but the QWERTY keyboard, the plow, interpretation of sonograms, sex change operations and WebMD.com, are all instances when the body and technology are interacting to coproduce outcomes. This course looks at the relationship between digital technology and the human body, students are asked to examine the increasing influence technology has on our bodies and understandings of ourselves, while also looking at the way that historical and material construction of the body has influenced technology. Students will be introduced to theories of practice and design that describe the interaction of bodies and technologies in historical perspective and will be asked to consider how these two will continue to interact in the future.
